Anna Burbach

Anna Burbach - Oberselters, Nassau, Germany

In December of 2003 my husband and I traveled to Germany to visit our daughter and her family. While there, we made a visit to Oberselters, Nassau, Germany. My great-great-grandfather, Georg Burbach, traveled from Oberselters to Villmar and married Catharina Caspari in 1848. We were very lucky to find the family name still present in the cemetery in Oberselters. Usually one only retains a grave, in Germany, for 20 to 30 years.

Mamma Dear's Madonna

The marble madonna pictured lived on a ledge in my grandmother's living room in Chicago. It wasn't an ordinary ledge, it was about two feet above the floor and in front of a massive mirror wall. When I visited my grandmother, I used to dance in front of the mirror under the gaze of Mary. I also remember staying overnight with my grandmother and being allowed to stand behind her, brushing her long silver hair, while she read the newspaper with magnifying glass in hand.
After my grandmother's death, the madonna presided from the bookcase in my mother's living room. When my mother moved to Florida, she moved to my house. I also moved to Florida and this time the lady went with. She now lives in my daughter's living room in Texas. Where will the future take her next?

Collaboration Rocks!

My Grandmother, Alice Fleming of Ballylanders, Limerick, Ireland, was the youngest of twelve children.  Ten of those children immigrated to the United States.  One of those returned to Ireland to seek his fortune.  Currently I am part of a group of Fleming descendants who are working together via e-mail to pool the information we have gathered.  There are ten of us representing three Flemings, not too bad since one of the Flemings became a priest and one a nun.  Wouldn't it be great if we could find representatives of the other siblings?  Those participating in the group effort are located in FL, MI, WI, IL, CA, and WA.  We have also made contact with the descendants of one of Alice's uncles who immigrated to Australia and the descendants of a sister of Alice who remained in Ireland.  How difficult this would have been before the internet.

Addie - too young

When we found this tombstone, we found two children we never knew about. It all happened between census reports.

Treasure Chest Thursday

I found this treasure in my mail box last week. It was from the boy in the plaid shirt. He was trying to identify several of the children in the picture. With the help of a cousin I was able to identify all of them. It was my 5th birthday. I am in the back center and all the others are either siblings or cousins! Even better everyone is still alive 60+ years later.
