Military Monday - Dan Hardie in the Spanish American War
Dan Hardie left his home in Ohio at a young age determined to travel to world seeking adventure. At the age of 20 he enlisted in the U S Army. He joined the 1st Texas regiment and was assigned to Company F also known as the Belknap Rifles. They were based in San Antonio, Texas. During the war, his unit served in Cuba. Below is a photo of the camp in Cuba. Camp Columbia was established in 1898 outside of Havanna.

My Grandfather, Dan Hardie owned Hardie's Casino on Miami Beach. He also owned a large boat that shuttled people from the mainland of Miami to wooden platform on Miami Beach where they then walked to the Casino.Changed into bathing suits and went swimming.His son bought property at 2100 NW N River Dr. Miami, where he built Hardie Yacht Basin. When he went off to war he turned it over to his father, Dan Hardie, who ran it until he got back home.Richards brother, William later helped him and upon Richards death..William and I ran it. When William passed away, my wife and I owned it. We sold it 8 yrs ago and moved to Port Orange, Fl................Dan Hardie

DeleteMy family name was Hardee and they lived in Miami also. I am not sure what happened here but I believe that there was some kind of family fight that led to
some of the Hardees taking on the name of Hardie. Do you have any knowledge of what that was all about?

Wayne, I am sorry to advise you that Dan Hardie died in the Fall of 2011. As far as I know the Hardie family has always has the same spelling but I have not researched this family very far back. I do know that they came to Miami from Ohio. Maybe one of Dan's children will see this and respond.
